they are teaching. when you have a tragedy as bad as connecticut, the teachers on top of the parents have also lost a child. i had two teachers in elementary schools. the security there is as much as the security is going to get in the school. when you look at schools and said, this is the safest place to be. for it to happen in an elementary school, the first school you enter as a child, that is devastating. when you see the parents crying and upset, you have to rush back to your child's school because there has been this devastating event happened. host: you are an educator in baltimore and we are showing the front page of "the baltimore sun." talk to us about the security of your school. what does a person have to do to get into the school during the school day? caller: you have to be bused in, you go to the office to get a pass. the office personnel are not equipped to handle a gunman coming through the door. even if you take the precaution of having the doors locked and going through the office first, there is no security in the office. there is no security guard. you just sign in and say what

york, the people of connecticut in particular, others as well, have sustained a very, very damaging blow both corporately and individually. we need to act on that. historically supplementals are not paid for, are passed so that we can meet the immediate need. mr. crowley will speak to that. but let me say this. the answer to your question is it's part of the math. if we're going to put our country on a fiscally sustainable path, we're going to have to consider all the expenditures we made, whether we paid for them initially or not, we're going to have to put that into the math and it needs to be a part of the agreement. i've said this is a math problem. certainly the dollars we spend will have to be accounted for and will have to be paid for over a longer period of time. but we can amortize that immediate expense that we need to make on behalf of the severely adversely affected damaged areas, we need to make that expenditure now. but we need to pay for that over the longer term. so to that extent, yes, it will be part of the -- for my own standpoint, part of the math that will have

of massachusetts, connecticut and the state of rhode island could look at over six inches of snow with areas possibly seeing a foot of snow. so again the chance of seeing more snow from this next storm system is increasing here. it is pulling in a lot of moisture from the gulf of mexico. that is one of the reasons why we think we could see a little more than originally anticipated. right now it is producing snow across areas in chicago, northern parts of the state of indiana that into michigan. on the southern end of the storm system we have showers and thunderstorms in louisiana, mississippi and tennessee. eventually both of these areas will be coming together and moving towards the northeast. i do quickly want to point out between these areas we're actually seeing freezing rain falling early this morning across places in arkansas and northern texas. please drive carefully out there. that is outside the city of memphis as well. western portions of state of tennessee dealing with possible icing on the roadways. otherwise a number of winter weather advisories issued for the state of new jerse

tragedy at newtown, connecticut and the picture, the first grade picture has been released and just drives home the incredible loss and tragedy. this was one classroom and now the name, vicky soto's class, the 27-year-old teacher who had the zest for life who was killed. and many cite her as a hero and half of the class was saved and the story goes, we don't know, this is reported by six and seven year olds and the story was vague, she apparently hid them all in a closet and when she was killed, when she confronted the gunman and told them that she had sent them to the auditorium, she was killed and when some of the kids heard the gunshots, they ran out and they were killed. >> clayton: and olivia engel, apparently this photo was released by olivia's mother and appeared in the new york post this morning and as we continue to talk about what unfolded that day and of course, you look at the horrible images and many people were reminded what happened and unfolded in columbine, of course. then on friday, this was exacerbated this discussion about gun control and whether or not there should be

passed since a house fire shattered the life of a mother in connecticut. it killed her three daughters, and both of her parents, on christmas day. now the woman says it was a real challenge finding the strength to move on with her life. the mom told a local newspaper she and a friend were wrapping presents. the friend cleaned ashes that had blown out of a small fireplace and threw them in the garbage bin before she went to sleep. one hour later, the woman woke up choking, flames and smoke engulfed the house. firefighters pulled her out but they could not save her children or her parents in time. the mother said she somehow made it through the funeral services but eventually she broke down. she said that her hair turned gray and fell out in clumps and they threaded to kill herself by overdosing on pills. this year another friend in arkansas agreed to take her in as long as she did not commit suicide. now the mom says support from friends and memories of her children have kept her going. she arranged a trip to thailand for this christmas so she could donate her daughter's toys to an orph

, the fiscal cliff, newtown, connecticut, what happened up there, that's the gem feeling overall. jcpenney, they've had promotions walking away from it every day, low discount price story. oppenheimer noted discount racks had been cleared and the traffic seems to have improved in that store. maybe that change in their philosophy has helped them out. that's a note that was out on oppenheimer today. bottom line here, guys, is i think we are seeing some movement with some companies to deal with some of these retail sales issues. you'll see a lot of pressure on margins. david, i think you mentioned this, about what was going on with inflows and outflows from equity mutual funds. it's true we're continuing to get outflows from equity mutual funds. that's certainly been disappointing. we had it going through up until last week. the end of last week, it was reported the first outflows from treasuries. more specifically, from general bond funds. that's the first time we've seen this in a very, very long time. all right, it was a very small number, something on the order of $1 billion or something
